Writing Contests

NautilusAt some point most writers want to reach out and let another person read what they have written. The Whidbey Island Writers Association offers a variety of contests in which writers of all levels can participate in a nonthreatening arena and gain experience in the literary submission process with the possibility of receiving valuable rewards.

The Benefactor’s Award Writing Contest, is part of the annual Writers Conference and is open only to Conference participants.

Two of our contests are open to residents of Whidbey Island only. These are the Student Celebrate Writing Contest for kindergarten through grade 12 and the Spirit of Writing Contest for adults.

Our newest contests are affiliated with the Association's magazine, Soundings Review, and are open to all writers. The Founders Circle contest accepts submissions in all genres of prose and poetry. The First Publication Contest is for anyone who has never before published in a publication open to national submissions nor in a publication advertised nationally. And the Readers Choice Award is selected by readers from stories, articles and poems published in each issue of Soundings Review.
