NORTHWEST INSTITUTE OF LITERARY ARTS
WHIDBEY WRITERS WORKSHOP

CATALOG, 2009-2011

CONTINUING EDUCATION PROGRAM
(Residency-only Classes)

The Northwest Institute of Literary Arts includes among its values the following: “We value, support, and encourage… writers of all ages, levels of skill, experience, and interests.”

In accordance with that value and with its mission, the Institute invites writers from the general community to participate on a non-credit basis in the Northwest Institute of Literary Arts MFA residencies. No degrees or certificates are required for participation.

Participation includes workshops, craft classes and presentations by visiting writers. Two options are available:

  • Option A: Nine days of classes. Registration fee: $800.00
  • Option B: Five days of classes (days one-five only). Registration fee: $450.00
  • Housing and meal expenses are in addition to the registration fee

A maximum of six non-credit participants will be admitted in each genre.

To Apply (options A and B): Persons wishing to participate in workshops must send a letter of application describing their writing experience along with 20 pages of material (two hard copies and one electronic copy as an attachment to an e-mail) in the workshop genre in which they wish to participate -- fiction, poetry, children/young adult, or non-fiction. Acceptance will be based on the quality of the material submitted.

For information about application periods for each residency, e-mail mfa@whidbey.com, call (360) 331-0307, or visit the "Residency-only" page on the Workshop's web site http://www.writeonwhidbey.com/mfa/nondegreeresidency.htm.

Requirements: Any interested individual may participate. No degree or certificate is required. Admission to the residency is based on the quality of the manuscript submitted (see above for manuscript guidelines).

Individuals who have successfully completed a residency are welcome to apply for subsequent residencies by a letter describing their previous residency experience. No manuscript is required for subsequent residency-only applications.
