WHIDBEY WRITERS WORKSHOP
Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing

CATALOGUE, 2007-2009

Director's Greeting & Certification

Welcome to the Whidbey Writers Workshop, a program of the Whidbey Island Writers Association.

The Whidbey Writers Workshop MFA Program is the first in this country--and perhaps in the world--to be offered not by a college or university, but by an organization of writers. In this, it resembles the many free-standing arts institutions offering degrees in music, art, dance, and theatre.

The MFA you'll read about in this Catalogue will be one of the most flexible low-residency MFAs around. Most other brief-residency programs require fifteen-credit "blocks" each term and must be completed in two years. Ours will offer five-credit individual courses so that students may work at their own pace, taking from two to six years to complete the program.

Since approval has taken place only recently (July 15, 2004, as I write this Greeting on September 20,2004), we're still in the process of adding faculty and staff. Keep an eye on our website, www.writeonwhidbey.org/mfa, as we continue to update.

I hope to see you at our intensive 10-day residencies here on beautiful Whidbey Island. Whether or not you decide to come to Whidbey, keep writing.

Yours,

Wayne Ude MFA Program Director
